 Ted Bainbridge
presents "I Can't Find It On A Map" Have you ever felt frustrated because you couldn't find some place on a map? Ted will share his secrets for locating hard-to-find towns and geographic features. Examples of successes using various methods. Effective internet search strategies. Favorite web sites. Overcoming foreign language problems. Working around erroneous or confusing information. Ted Bainbridge has been a genealogical researcher, teacher, speaker, and writer since 1969. He has served as president of the Longmont Genealogical Society and as a staff member in LDS Family History Centers. His genealogical and historical articles have been published by dozens of organizations in the United States and Great Britain. Ted frequently speaks to organizations on the Front Range. The DNA Study Group will meet in the Fireside Room after the general membership meeting and refreshments. Glenn York will share some notes and highlights from the Institute 4 Genetic Genealogy conference he attended in December. The presentation will include a DNA basics review along with some new trends, tools, and predictions of what to expect in 2018. There will also be some time for Q & A about your DNA results or planning your tests. |

presents "The New Find-A-Grave" Find-a-Grave is a website on which volunteers create memorials for deceased persons. It has over 165 Million memorials to date with about 20 million being added each year, and it is ranked as the 3rd most visited genealogy related site in the United States. These memorials may contain; name, birth and death dates, burial location, parents, children, siblings and a biographical sketch of the person. They may also have photos of the person, the grave marker, and sometimes relevant source documents. Find-a-Grave started as a small one person effort over a decade ago, but outgrew that and was taken over by Ancestry about a year ago (BUT - It's Still Free). The website interface was in need of improvements. Changes have been made and have been in Beta test for several months. The old web format, while available for now, is likely to disappear any day now. 'Mick' Mickelson will demonstrate the differences between old and new formats with emphasis on now to do things on the new Find-a-Grave website format, and some of its new features. Mick served for twenty years in the Unites States Air Force, followed by a 25 year career in the Aerospace industry. 'Mick' has been using computers professionally for over 50 years, and for genealogy for over 20 years. He has been pursuing his family genealogy research for the past 25 years, and is past president of the Longmont Genealogy Society. The DNA Study Group will meet in the Fireside Room after the general membership meeting and refreshments. |

Quest for Missing Family?" Ellen is a local and national genealogical speaker and writer who has over 25 years experience researching family history and genealogy. She is Past President of the Colorado Jewish Genealogical Society and past Director of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. She is a member of the Indian Peaks Chapter of the D.A.R. and of the Colorado Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists.  Carol Darrow presents "Emigration Out of Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England: Pushing and PuIIing" Emigration is the process of leaving one's country of residence to live elsewhere. There is a push/pull effect - reasons why someone would feel the need to leave their homeland and reasons that would attract emigrants to a particular new home. Immigration to America started as early as 1608 with 100-200 people a year, and by 1900 reached a flood of one million immigrants per year from countries around the world. Ship travel by sail or steam could be harrowing and new arrivals in America found settling into a new country could be a daunting task. Carol Darrow, CG, will describe the various forces that pushed people out of their comfort zone of home to sail off to a new uncharted country, and the pulling force that drew people to the American continent. Carol Darrow has been a nationally certified genealogist since 2005, past president of the Colorado Genealogical Society and currently volunteers on Tuesdays at DPL and on Thursdays at the National Archives-Denver Branch in Broomfield.
