Beginning Genealogy Classes

Longmont Genealogical Society Zoom Meeting

These classes are designed for those people (1) interested in starting their research into their families/ancestors, (2) people who have already started but need some organization and direction to continue and form good habits, and (3) those who want to learn how to navigate the most common genealogical websites. We will spend some time on most every topic you need to know to get started in genealogy research including immigration, censuses, where to start your tree, military sites, county sites, navigating the most commonly use websites, obituaries, death certificates, using Google and Facebook and soliciting information from family members.

Gail will show several documents and websites on her computer screen during the classes to demonstrate how to use each but if you don’t have a camera on your device to see what she is showing, you can listen, take notes and she will explain every step and give you the location of every website. Bring your listening ears, pen and paper to take notes.

DNA Study Group

The DNA study Group for 2020 will study "Genetic Genealogy in Practice", by Blaine T. Bettinger and Debbie Parker Wayne. This book is available from National Genealogical Society (NGS) or Amazon. Mick Mickelson can order from NGS using the LGS account. If you are not an NGS member you may want to talk to Mick, because the non-member or Amazon price is higher.

Everyone should read the chapter and work through the end of chapter exercises before the class.

The schedule for 2020 will be:

8 January - Kickoff meeting - discuss book in general, Chapter one and plan for the year.
12 February - Chapter 2 - discuss the chapter and end of chapter exercises

The following meetings dates in Red will be Zoom Meetings after the regular Membership Meeting.

13 May - Chapter 3 - Genealogical Applications for Y-DNA - Glenn
10 June - Chapter 4 - Genealogical Applications for mtDNA - Diana
12 August - Chapter 5 - Genealogical Applications for atDNA - Mick
9 September - Chapter 6 - Genealogical Applications for X-DNA - Therese
14 October - Chapter 7 - Incorporating DNA Testing in a Family Study - Volunteer ?
11 November - Chapter 8 & 9 - Incorporating DNA Testing in a written Conclusion - Volunteer ?

Do we want to adopt another book? Do we want to rotate members sharing their experiences?

Please check back for scheduling updates
