Longmont Genealogical Society
2nd Wednesday of the Month
the Zoom Membership Meetings
2022 Northern Colorado DNA Study Group plan Proposed concept is for this DNA group to be open to all members of Genealogical Societies of Northern Colorado (Weld co. GS, Larimer co. GS, Broomfield GS, Boulder GS, Longmont GS, Estes Park GS, Anthem Ranch GS, and other societies not named but interested in participating in this regional Study Group concept.)
Based on our discussions at the November 2021 meeting the group has decided they want to do a book study using “Genetic Genealogy in Practice” by Blaine T. Bettinger and Debbie Parker Wayne. This book is published by the National Genealogical Society and is available for purchase by NGS members through their site at https://www.ngsgenealogy.org for about $25.00. It is also available from Amazon. The Kindle version is $9.99, and the paperback version is $36.00.
This book study may be a review for some members, but often you will learn more as we go through the book and discuss the chapters a second time.
The book study will start in February with one chapter discussed each month except for chapter 5 on autosomal DNA which will be split over two meetings. Each study group member should read the chapter and work through the end of chapter exercises prior to the meeting. The meeting should focus on highlights from the chapter and discussions about the questions. (The book provides answers to the exercises in the back of the book)
The group will meet initially (i.e. January) following the LGS general meeting on the 2nd Wednesday afternoon of the month from 3 to 5 pm. Future meeting days/times will be as desired by the majority of the participants. Meetings will be held via Zoom meeting until significant change in the COVID situation occurs. And even if we should resume in-person meetings at some point, meetings will still be streamed over Zoom for the benefit of those who may not wish to travel to the physical location.
This group is all volunteers, and we need group members to step up and volunteer to lead group discussions throughout the year. The proposed schedule is:
